In the last two years, the Australian economy has been characterized by increased government spending on the public sector, causing a major disparity between public and private market segments. At the same time, despite increased government efforts, unemployment remained tight, averaging 4% in 2024. For a time, the private sector has been showing clear signs of stagnation, but by late 2025, the situation took a slight turn for the better, finally showing a 4.7% increase in job opportunities.
Regional disparities also continue to impact the Australian job market, with Sydney and Melbourne traditionally providing the most jobs. So, have there been any major developments beyond these two hubs in other parts of Australia? So we decided to explore our internal database to find out. Below are the findings for most sought-after Australian cities for work based off of real recruiters searches on the SignalHire database in 2025.
TOP-9 Australian Cities for Work
1 Sydney, NSW, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Account Manager, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Assistant to Office Manager
Sydney has always been the centre of all things professional in Australia – not least because the big IT companies, including Atlassian, are always on the prowl for human talent. But other sectors also are trying, including automotive (with Tesla leading) and retail, represented by the likes of Woolworths Group and Coles Group. Notably, Sydney companies are also trying to fill CEO positions, which, according to our previous analytics, ranked second on the list of global in-demand jobs in mid-2024.
In the public sector, the most lucrative career opportunities are in finance, which also makes sense, considering that Sydney is one of the major finance hubs worldwide.
2 Melbourne, VIC, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Information Technology Manager, Account Manager, Speech Pathologist
Even though Victoria has the highest unemployment rate in Australia, its major city, Melbourne, does not lack job opportunities. You’re well represented here in both the public and private sectors, with plenty of career opportunities in IT, manufacturing, logistics/transportation, finance and healthcare. Melbourne is home to some of the largest banks such as ANZ Banking Group and National Australia Bank.
Although it should be noted that the Royal Melbourne Hospital is one of the largest employers in the government-sponsored healthcare sector, which is also currently looking for speech pathologists. There are also various jobs opened in other sectors such as IT (Nintendo), telecommunications (Telstra), tech (Toyota Australia) and others.
3 Brisbane, QLD, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Account Manager, Environmental Consultant, Business Development Manager
The three most in-demand professions of 2024 all pertained to business development and illustrate the importance of Brisnabe as Australia’s fledgling tech, logistics, education, and tourism capital. The demand for account managers suggests the city’s business prospects are growing but an emerging interest in environmental consultants explains the time (and spent in procuring sustainable business practices) among some of its highest-impact employers, including Virgin Australia, based there.
At the same time, the rise of sustainable practices is leading to a required new generation of business development managers, third on the list of searches conducted in Brisbane for prospective recruitment.
4 Perth, WA, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Accountant, Dentist, Plastic Surgeon
Perth is Australia’s primary industrial center, with several mining, oil and gas firms, including Rio Tinto and the Fortescue Metals Group and Woodside Energy companies headquartered here. A finance and accounting expert are being sought after by most of these corporations who used to be the chief employers in the region.
Insurance, heavily subsidized by the government, is likewise growing. These don’t affect job opportunities in the private healthcare sectors, however: eg dentists or plastic surgeons.
5 Canberra, ACT, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Business Analyst, Solution Architect, DevOps Engineer
In terms of the public sector, Canberra is largely a public administration city, with many federal departments and agencies that are key employers. But it’s also a major IT hub, and because our database is used mainly by private recruiters, it’s hardly surprising that technology vacancies appeared so high in the capital.
Gentex, Canberra Data Centres, Intelledox, Cochlear Limited and QuintessenceLabs are just some of the hundreds of IT companies based in Canberra. Other major employers include Geocon (construction) and Northrop Grumman Australia (aerospace and defense), which are also seeking managers and business analysts to help oversee the digital transformation of their industries.
6 Adelaide, SA, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Sales Manager, General Manager, Civil Engineer Senior
South Australia is a key component of the national economy. In terms of career pathways, unfortunately the private sector in Adelaide was limited to retail in 2024. Peregrine Corporation alone operates 600+ convenience stores and employs over 6,500 people in the area. But other private companies like Thomas Foods International are seeking qualified sales and general managers as well.
Both sectors are experiencing high demand for civil engineering occupations, with large oil, gas and mining companies such as Santos Limited and Codan Limited actively seeking professionals.
7 Gold Coast, QLD, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Welder Fabricator, Account Manager, Infrastructure Manager
The Gold Coast economy was predominantly driven by a construction boom in December 2024 for both residential and commercial sectors. Skilled construction workers including welders, and account and infrastructure managers were also desperately needed to build several sites, starting with Gold Coast City Marina & Shipyard — which has been in operation for more than 20 years and is now increasing its boat-building capacity.
The Gold Coast airport, another major employer and a chief infrastructure facility in the area is also expanding – which means more jobs for qualified workers.
8 Newcastle, NSW, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Account Manager, Environmental Consultant, General Manager
Newcastle is a major industrial center in New South Wales and yet another top-10 city undergoing an economic renaissance. And the city’s home to a lot of heavy industry, including global companies such as Bradken — which makes and supplies mining, transport and other industrial equipment and parts; Comsteel, produces steel products for rails, wheels and axels; Honeysuckle Development Corporation is also there helping with urban renewal projects.
As today’s construction and manufacturing operations need to be in line with sustainable development plans, the need for environmental consultants and professionals who will manage the operations will further increase.
9 Darwin, NT, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Maintenance and Engineering Manager, CEO, Store Manager
Darwin’s economy has long been reliant on mining and tourism. Based on the recent figures we analyzed, it seems mining is leading the way now with employers actively seeking engineering managers. But several other managerial jobs, including C-level positions, are also in demand and it’s probably due to Darwin’s thriving business environment, with SMEs on the rise.
Darwin is naturally home to some notable employers in the Northern Territories, including Santos, one of the largest oil and gas producers in the country, and an air charter company Hardy Aviation.
Bonus: Smaller Cities with High Hiring Activity
Gladstone, QLD, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Diesel Mechanic, Health and Safety Advisor, Boilermaker
Gladstone, with its roughly 45,000 population, is not exactly an industrial hub, and yet blue-collar jobs in the area are peaking. Besides, the city’s gradual transition to renewable energy sources should soon create new jobs in the area, according to Queensland authorities. The sustainable energy boom is not quite there yet, but job seekers would be wise to consider this destination to reap all the early-bird relocation benefits before the town gets too crowded.
South Brisbane, QLD, Australia

Most in-demand professions: Environmental Scientist, Plant Ecologist, Embedded Software Engineer
Administratively, South Brisbane is a small town with a population of under 15,000, but de facto, it is one of Brisbane’s inner districts. Similarly to the larger Brisbane area, the southern part is in need of environmentalists and IT experts, but considering the growth of Queensland construction, education, and healthcare projects, other job opportunities should not be lacking either – especially considering that Brisbane has already ranked third on our list of best Australian cities for job seekers, preceded only by the two unbeatable champions – Sydney and Melbourne.

Methodology
We have observed every job search conducted on our database from November 2023 through October 2024 for this analysis. Then we filtered all of the inquiries to Australia, isolating the cities with the most searches. We’ve compiled these results in a list of nine cities. Two smaller cities are hiring more these days as well, so we included them in a bonus section. So for each city we appended the most frequent jobs that appeared in recruiters’ searches, by which we mean the top three.
This post, in particular, is based on the outcome of our internal database used mostly by recruiters from private firms as well as marketers and business developers. This means it might not necessarily represent the hiring situation in Australia, particularly when looking at the most popular jobs. It does however give useful high-level data for private sector employment opportunities, as that is where the bulk of our users work.
Conclusion
While there are some disparities with the distribution of jobs and access to funding between public positions compared to private sectors in Australia over all, it is a relatively positive job state. New optimism fills, especially the private sector, which had experienced a downsizing recently. Combined with higher spending on Australian public sector development, this could provide a major economy boost in the coming years.
Like most other countries, the fastest growing private sector industries in Australia are IT and retail while government money goes mostly to health care, construction and green energy projects.
