The job market in America is turning pretty fast right now. Some sectors are booming and others are stalling, and if you’re job searching — or trying to hire — it’s helpful to know which are which. Job seekers can concentrate on the right opportunities, and companies can better plan their hiring.

SignalHire is a tool that helps recruiters, sales teams, and marketers track down email addresses and phone numbers. We’ve got more than 350 million professional profiles, and our browser extension works with LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and other professional sites. And because thousands of recruiters and sales professionals access SignalHire to search for candidates every day, we had a snapshot of some interesting trends on who’s hiring, and where.

What sets our data apart is that it’s based on actual searches occurring on our platform. When recruiters are searching for candidates in certain industries, we’re able to see where the demand really is. That’s more meaningful than a lot of other studies because we’re asking what’s really going on in hiring, not just guessing.

Methodology

We turned to SignalHire’s own data to see which industries are growing most briskly. Here’s what we did:

We analysed all searches of SignalHire users from January to December 2014. Most of our users are recruitment, sales, and marketing people looking for the contact information of a candidate or potential client.

For each search we figured out what industry the searcher worked in. We then calculated what percentage of all searches in a given industry each of these industries received on average each month. This showed us how search behavior changed month to month throughout the year by industry.

We used something called linear regression analysis to calculate per-industry growth rates. It’s kind of a math trick to make it simpler to see which industries had the steepest “positive floors” for search activity all year.

Once we’d crunched all the numbers, we ranked the industries based on their growth rates. The ones with the most growth were selected for our top 10.

Our data reflects what SignalHire users are searching for and it’s primarily recruiters and sales people. So what we’re seeing in our data reflects real hiring demand, not just how many job postings are out there. But our data could differ from other studies because we’re looking at a specific group of people who are actively attempting to find and hire talent.

Conclusion

The USA’s fastest-growing industries have promising job prospects both for job seekers and business owners. Hospitality, entertainment and human resources lead the growth, followed by insurance, engineering and animal services. Media, marketing, real estate, and manufacturing complete the top 10.

Both have a variety of roles available in creative entertainment and technical engineering. The growth trends are a reflection of broader economic shifts, including the return of travel, greater concentration on employee experience and the digitization of business processes.

For job hunters, these sectors are the most promising for career development and employment stability. For companies, knowledge of these trends can aid in strategic planning and talent scouting.
