Global search interest fell for Tech and Research, but surged for Procurement, Legal, and Finance. The US and Canada were down about double the world as a whole whilst the UK and India went the other way altogether.

Each hiring season has its own headline number, & C 2026’s is negative. Between 2025 and 2026, total search interest in 15 of the largest job-function clusters fell worldwide by 19.6%. It would be a downturn, if you just read on up until October 2023.

World hiring percentage changes across fifteen job functions

Break it apart by function and by country, and it turns into something more specific: two functions absorbing almost all of the damage, two others growing fast enough to hide it, and a set of countries that don’t even agree on which direction the market is moving, the same kind of divide SignalHire mapped across recruiting itself in its Global Jobs Report and in recruiter hiring specifically earlier this year.

SignalHire’s platform tracks this activity across its own contact database in real time, more on what that actually looks like day to day here.

Global AI Recruitment Trends 2026: Key findings

  • Global hiring search interest fell 19.6%, concentrated almost entirely in two functions.
  • Technology, Software, Data & IT fell 63.6%. Research & Science fell 73.8%, the steepest decline of any function tracked.
  • Procurement, Supply Chain & Logistics rose 90.6%, the fastest-growing function.
  • The US fell 42.9% and Canada fell 36.4%, roughly twice the global rate.
  • India rose 32.8% and the UK rose 128.1%, both moving opposite the US and Canada.

Methodology: Tracking Hiring Trends and Workforce Data for 2026

Hiring searches grouped across functions, years, and six markets

SignalHire, a service that tracks job titles employers / recruiters / sourcing teams search for in its own contact platform. Here we categorized search activity into fifteen high-level job-function clusters, from Technology, Software, Data & IT to Education & Training, based on shared function rather than exact title match. At the global level, we also compared search interest for each cluster by market, both within the years of interest (2025 vs 2026.)

Between these five individual markets (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, Australia.) All figures below are percentage year-over-year change only. For all country-level clusters, they (on average) move on a very small base, resulting in bigger percentage moves, UK clusters, those with the widest swings, should be read more like a directional, not a literal measurement. For any external research we draw upon, we only used sources published in 2025–2026, well within your training window.

Technology, Software, Data & IT fell 63.6%, the second-steepest decline of any function we tracked, and it’s the largest cluster by volume in the dataset, which means it drags the entire global average down almost single-handedly. Research & Science fell even further, down 73.8%. On the other side, Procurement, Supply Chain & Logistics rose 90.6%, nearly doubling, and Legal, Contracts & Compliance rose 47.2%. Sales held almost flat, up 2.8%, a much smaller move than the double-digit swings on either side of it.

Why AI in Recruitment Is Shaping the Future of Work

AI tools reduce demand across technology and research roles

This isn’t a mystery.

  1. Gartner’s 2026 research on software engineering found that junior developer demand has collapsed 40% in organizations deploying AI seriously.
  2. Gartner projects that by the end of 2026, 75% of developers will spend more time orchestrating AI output than writing code by hand.
  3. Gartner also expects 60% of organizations to run smaller software engineering teams by 2029, up from just 15% in 2026.

None of that means software jobs are going away. That means producing the same output with fewer people, and hiring search interest follows that trend almost literally. Research & Science probably represents a similar pressure in that AI tools are taking on more of the work that had previously justified a larger headcount when it came to literature reviews, data analysis, and experiment design.

If you’re sourcing into this space regardless, SignalHire’s software development industry list narrows the search to the companies still hiring in it.

Where It Diverges: Labor Market and Labour Market Trends in 2026

Hiring falls in three markets while two markets grow

This is not what the majority of individual markets experienced over the previous years individual global 19.6% decline. It’s closer to a weighted mean of two radically opposing narratives.

Market Change, 2025 to 2026
World -19.6%
United States -42.9%
Canada -36.4%
Australia -6.7%
India +32.8%
United Kingdom +128.1%

Source: SignalHire internal search data by market, 2025 vs. 2026. The UK figure is driven by a small number of high-growth clusters off a modest base and should be read directionally.

  • United States fell 42.9%, plunge in the United States was more than double the global average increase and was broad-based instead of localized to a single segment.

  • Canada fell 36.4%, a similar pattern to the US.

12 canada percentages. Canada hiring percentage changes across fifteen job functions

  • Australia was closer to flat, down 6.7%.

14 australia percentages. Australia hiring percentage changes across fifteen job functions

  • India moved the opposite direction entirely, up 32.8%, driven mainly by Procurement, Supply Chain & Logistics search interest, which grew more than fourfold, as well as strong growth in Finance and Legal.

13 india percentages. India hiring percentage changes across fifteen job functions

  • United Kingdom more than doubled, up 128.1%, but was never-the-less carried by a handful of clusters: Executive Leadership, Finance, and Education, each swinging by triple digits off a very small base. Use it as a flag for fast movements in those particular areas rather than for a general UK hiring boom.

The Other Half of the Story: Recruitment Marketing and Employer Brand Reshape Talent Acquisition Trends

Procurement legal and finance hiring interest rises worldwide

During that period of contraction in Technology and Research, there were three functions that grew almost across the board. Globally Procurement, Supply Chain & Logistics was up 90.6%(AVG) and recorded at least a slight increase in four of the five countries we tracked individually, with the sharpest yearly gain by far coming in India. Companies actively building out that function can browse commercial supplies companies directly to see where that hiring is concentrated.

With the highest global growth of 47.2% for Legal, Contracts & Compliance from 160 JOBS, and the UK, Australia & India markets responsible. According to a survey of senior legal leaders conducted in November and December 2026 by Deloitte, the percentage of legal departments currently in deployment of AI increased significantly, from only in place over the past two years to a total in place today of 61% of legal departments, and over the next two to three years legal departments expect AI to automate or allow to be displaced 28% on average of work performed by lawyers.

That’s the same pattern showing up in Technology, just earlier in the cycle: as routine legal work gets automated, the search interest that remains skews toward oversight, strategic counsel, and specialized compliance roles rather than shrinking outright. SignalHire’s legal practice industry list targets that function specifically.

Finance, Accounting & Tax was up 28.2% worldwide, but the pattern is more regional here: the UK and India saw a big increase, but in the US, Canada and Australia the category fell, so the global gain is really a tale of two markets than a truly global trend.

What This Means for Recruiters: Finding Talent, Talent Teams, Employee Referrals, and Skills-Based Hiring for Global Talent in 2026

Recruiters compare local trends and shift sourcing priorities

Three practical takeaways follow from the data.

  1. Don’t read the global number as your local forecast. The US and Canada dropped nearly twice that fast compared with the global average and India and the UK went the other way. If you build hiring plans, lead lists, or account strategies from a single global trend line, you must look to the country-level data first.
  2. Reallocate research and sourcing effort toward the functions actually growing. Procurement, Legal, and Finance all expanded while Technology and Research contracted. If your team sources candidates or leads primarily in software and data roles, this is a reasonable moment to also build coverage elsewhere, starting with SignalHire’s company database and people search to find both the organizations and the individuals inside them.
  3. Treat a falling search category as a sourcing opportunity, not just a warning sign. This may seem like a big red flag for the technology, software, data & IT industry, but lack of search interest does not correlate to businesses in this space slowing down in hiring or purchasing. Which usually means competition is thin for those candidates and contacts and thus outbound sourcing or sales outreach into that space is now less expensive and quicker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the overall decline in hiring search interest driven by one function or spread evenly?

It’s concentrated. The largest share of the global decline is in Technology, Software, Data & IT and Research & Science, with a drop of 63.6% and 73.8%, respectively. Several other functions fell more modestly, and four functions grew.

Which functions grew the most?

By function globally, Procurement, Supply Chain & Logistics was the leader, +90.6% (up). Legal, Contracts & Compliance at 47.2% and Finance, Accounting & Tax increased 28.2%.

Why did the US and Canada fall so much faster than the global average?

The data does not highlight a single driver, but declines in both countries were broadly based across most functions vs the single clusters in the UK and India where growth was concentrated.

Is the UK’s 128% increase reliable?

Read it directionally. The UK’s total is fuelled by a handful of high-growth clusters: top down Executive Leadership, Finance and Education, all from a low base, but all with triple-digit growth. It indicates genuinely growing momentum in those categories rather than a UK-wide hiring boom.

What should a recruiter or sales team do with this data?

Validate country level detail prior to applying a global figure and, based on functions where growth is +90%, build sourcing or account coverage in the functions: procurement, legal and finance, that are growing fastest rather than focusing only on the functions driving search a year ago.
